How To Play Violin

Filed under: Love Of Music @ 11:07 pm

This article gives the essential basics for how to play the violin. Generally violins are quite commonly available instruments and it is reasonably easy to rent or buy a violin. Children may need smaller violins (from an eighth, quarter, half, three-quarters, seven-eighths up to full size) to accommodate smaller hands if they are going to be learning over an extended period.

The Basics

The bow is held in the right hand with the thumb bent underneath the frog to support it and the other hands loosely gripping the wood. There are many different holds and it its important to find one that suits your hand size and strength. The violin is held with the left hand, with the chin on the chin rest supporting most of the weight, and the fingers loosely coiled around the neck of the violin. The thumb should be relaxed but firm. The left elbow should be curved under the violin. The violin should be roughly horizontal and the right arm held high. The main methods of playing the violin are bowed and pizzicato.

Bowed

The bow should be drawn swiftly and smoothly across the strings, about halfway between the fingerboard and the bridge. A down bow starts with the hand close to the strings pulling across the string from left to right, and is generally used on strong beats. An up bow goes the opposite way, right to left, and is used on weaker beats and upbeats. However with practice down bows and up bows should be fairly difficult to distinguish. Slurs in music indicate that all notes within a slur should be played in the same bow movement. To play loud notes, the bow is pressed down harder on the string using the index finger or the bow is drawn across the string faster. To play more quietly use less pressure or draw the bow across the string slower. In classical music bowed music is indicated by the Italian term arco.

Pizzicato

To play pizzicato (often abbreviated to pizz.) the right thumb should be placed under the fingerboard and the index finger used to pull the string quickly upwards and across. For faster passages, the bow can be held while playing pizzicato, still using the index finger but without the support of the thumb. In more complex and advanced pieces, a small cross above the stave indicates the fingers of the left hand plucking the strings.

Fingering and positions

As there are no physical aids such as frets for violinists as there are for guitarists, accurate tuning comes with immense practice. On a full size violin, the tones are roughly two centimeters apart, but this is difficult to judge when playing since you are seeing from a different perspective. To aid tuning, it is very helpful to have a piano or other keyboard instrument when practicing.

The fingers of the left hand are conventionally named first (index finger) to fourth (little finger). When playing notes other than open strings (G, A, D and E), these fingers must press down hard, so that the string is shortened convincingly for a higher pitch. The standard intervals taught to beginners is tone, tone, semitone, tone (ie. G-A-B-C-D, D-E-F#-G-A, A-B-C#-D-E, and E-F#-G#-A-B). Of course the notes in between can be played by rearranging the hand position.

This is known as first position, where the first finger plays up to a tone above the open string. The next position usually taught is third position, where the first finger plays the note a perfect fourth above the open string (so, for example, third position on the A string would start on the D). All positions from first up to anywhere around tenth can be thus played, and two octaves on one string are considered fairly standard.

A beginner’s guide to DVD Systems

Filed under: Information Info @ 1:52 pm

What is a Digital Versatile Disc Recorder; it is plainly a disc recorder that allows you to tape telly dramas or films onto rewritable Digital Discs. They can be offered either as installable storage drives for PC desktops or as one off components for use in studios or home theatre systems. When DVD System’s were originally bought you could easily pay anything up to £2,000 for a box standard one, this is these days no longer the case.

Digital Versatile Disc Systems are today extraordinarily popular and have utterly taken over the video recorder, which is now there or thereabouts in the past. Like everything that include a technology base behind it there are many similar DVD systems to pick from. The most accepted ones to go for are ones with built in Hard Drives. This is a recording machine but it doesn’t offer viewers to pause & rewind which would be in contrast to what you would be capable to do on live telly. The basis of the Hard Drive in the DVD system is so that you are able to save numerous digital news programmes to the Hard Drive that can at a later date be copied on a re-writable Digital Versatile Disc. As well as this you can store straight onto DVD. Click here to find huge savings on many DVD Recorders at Digital Direct.

Various DVD systems with backup drives as a general rule contain an EPG for arranging recordings. There are numerous DVD Systems with Hard backup drives offered from reputable brands like that of JVC, Pioneer, Toshiba, etc.

The excellent thing currently is that DVD systems have never been this easy on your pocket, therefore it is possible for you to purchase a top of the range system for a very good price. The market is influenced by the latest equipment, new innovations and product quality, of which these are varying just about every hour.

The last time I fought depression it lasted for over three years. I had lost my ability to respond to anything good, in fact good things just hurt me more because they reminded me of what I once was able to enjoy. I had no incentive to even get out of a chair on my free time, and work was an excruciating ordeal I had to go through every day in order to earn the privilege of going back to sleep. Everything irritated me. None of the accomplishments of mankind seemed to impress me or feed me. I couldn’t even tolerate the banality of a magazine or any reading material because it seemed to trigger a painful exasperation. All I could think about was the person I used to be.

I knew that I was capable of being vitally interested in things, I had often connected with the rapt intimacy of a Muse, I had thrilled to every little detail going on around me, I had been able to buoy myself up when I experienced something ugly or discouraging. I had resilience. I trusted things, including my own judgement. I laughed a lot. I delighted in playing with words in my head, looked forward to each coming day, and most important, I felt cozy inside of myself.

When we are cozy inside of ourselves it is like we have come home. Everything fits. If there is no one else around at the time it doesn’t matter because we are so enthralled with the company of our own person. Nothing pinches us emotionally and nothing haunts us. We are completely satisfied with who we perceive ourselves to be. We feel creative and inspired, and no one can take that cozy feeling away from us. Every one of you reading this article must have felt that way at least at one point in your life.

Grab the memory and all the sensations of that time. Relive it in your mind, no matter how much it hurts that you cannot seem to recover that mental state. It will then become reinforced and will energize the parts of you which are ailing. You are reassured that yes, this condition is possible for you, so there is no reason why you could not find it again.

How do you find it again? For me, prozac was and is quite helpful. It balances your chemistry and so gives you a buffer between yourself and the raw hurts of this world. Secondly, I took a new plan of action even though I doubted my decision every step of the way. I needed to alter the physical surroundingsof my environment. Yes, those two treatments worked. But I discovered something really valuable along the way.

Many of the sensory impressions I had reacted to as being pathetic and hopeless turned out to be the the same ones that I was experiencing right now. This time, however, I delighted in them. I still am amazed when I see or hear something that would have disgusted me back in those days and I notice that this time it is acceptable and even enchanting at times. So don’t believe those hurtful impressions. I was shown that the way we perceive things is totally subjective, depending on where our own body chemistry and outlook are at the time.

Don’t let go of your model. Conjure it up every chance you get because that is the light which will guide you out of your hole. Remember that what seems unbearably negative could be tweaked into something nice if you just access the state that makes the change possible. Cheer yourself with the promise that unless you are brain damaged, you really will come back and you will feel wonderful once again. If you felt it before, then it is within your composition to feel it again.

How I Got A Pagerank Of 5 In One Month

Filed under: Traffic Generation @ 3:52 pm

About two months ago I started my own blog and I soon realized how hard can be to get some traffic to your site. You submitted your website to the search engines and finally got indexed, but if your site appears on a 5th ot 10th results page for a specific search, this will not bring a lot of traffic to your site.
Sounds familiar?

Well, bringing some quality traffic to your site is not that hard at the end. By putting some little effort in it I was able to achieve a pagerank of 5 in only one month and that drives pretty much traffic to my blog. My site was also showing in the top ten results on google for some really competitive keywords with millions of total results and I’ve done all this in weeks!

To drive good traffic to your site, you need to pay attention to two things:

1) Have quality content on your site
2) Have quality links pointing to your site ( or even better if you are able to exchange links )

I can’t help you much with your site content, since it depends a lot on your website, but I can give you some advices on how to find good links pointing to your site.

Linking is one of the most important factors in the search engine optimization process. The number and quality of links pointing to your site show how famous your website is and the Google’s pagerank is in fact calculated from the links pointing to a page, that’s why the pagerank indicates how important a page is. The Pagerank formula is quite simple, the pagerank of a page A is an adjusted sum of the inbound links pointing to page A. And the value of a single outbound link from page B is calculated by dividing the pagerank of page B by the number of outbound links on page B.

Now let’s take a look at where you can place links to your site.

1) Public forums - there are many public forums and places for discussion on the internet. Search for forums that you like, take part to the discussion and leave your link under your signiture. Remember to leave some quality posts, if you will just leave links you’ll be easily banned.

2) RSS feeds - If you own a blog or you have a RSS feed for syndication on your site, there are dozens of sites that will publish a link to your site or even distribute your content for free.

3) Digg.com - A really high traffic website with links to articles. If you can have a good article linked from Digg, it will drive you tons of traffic.

4) Article exchange - If you are a good writer and have the time to write, you can find hundreds of sites that will publish and distribute your article and they will all link back to your site.

5) Link exchange - If you find some good websites related to yours you can ask the webmaster if he would like to exchange links.

6) Own a blog to promote your site - blogs are so popular today that even bigger business websites are starting their own blogs. A blog can be a really powerful tool for marketing your site. It can attract thousands of fresh, targeted visitors to your site for free and can help you earn a #1 ranking in the search engines, and drive truckloads of highly targeted traffic to your site.

And remember, always look for quality and try to put links on pages with high pageranks.

Tartaric Crystals in Wine: the “Wine Diamonds” of Quality

Filed under: Food Stuff @ 10:52 am

Have you ever come across what appear to be white flakes floating in your bottle of wine? Did you assume that this snow-globe appearance somehow meant the wine was flawed or ruined?

What you had most likely seen are tartaric crystals, commonly referred to as “wine diamonds” or Weinstein (”wine stone”) in German speaking countries. So do these wine diamonds signal a bad bottle of wine?

Opinions about this issue are divided and the reason is simple: you have bought flawless wine, but you have not bought aesthetically flawless wine. Depending upon where you are from, this can matter to you more or less.

The American wine drinker is not used to finding wine diamonds in their bottles. Here, most wines undergo a cold stabilization process, which is when a wine is cooled down before it is bottled so that the white flakes, called crystallized tartaric acid, “fall out” and can be separated from the wine. But what price beauty? Cold stabilization influences a wine’s balance and taste: as some winemakers put it, the wine is actually being ripped apart, and the rapid cooling changes the wine’s colloidal structure. One might call it a clear case of style over substance.

There is another interesting correlation between wine stones and the quality of a wine: the longer the grapes hang on the vine (familiarly called “hang time”), the more wine acid will accumulate in the grape, and it is this wine acid which is the building block of wine diamonds. Furthermore, the more time the wine is given to ferment, the less wine diamonds will fall out during fermentation, but the more they will instead build up later in the bottle.

In other words, wine diamonds are an indicator that the grapes ripened for a long time, and that the winemaker fermented the wine slowly and with great care. Both are important precursors to crafting high quality wines.

Hans Gsellmann, head winemaker of the famous Gsellmann & Gsellmann winery in Austria, explains it this way: “Part of the grapes acid are tartrates, aka salt. As the wine ripens these tartaric acid crystals fall out. It’s a natural process a wine will go through on its path to the peak of its development. When you see these flakes at the bottom of the bottle or on the cork, you can be almost certain that you are opening the wine at the right time. You should consider yourself lucky.”

Wine aficionados in the Old World are known to seek out the bottles with wine stones as a sign of quality: it shows that the wine has not been robbed of its structure through unnatural chilling, and it is a sign of a well-matured wine. Perhaps it is due to the longer history of winemaking in these countries that people have become accustomed to wine stones and seem to accept them. At least they seem to know that, if anything, the wine diamonds will have added roundness to the wine by subtracting some of the acid from it.

There is new technology coming out of France that promises to circumvent the entire colloidal issue: electrodialysis. But until every noteworthy winery has bought one of these fancy French machines (and that will certainly be a few decades) this rule of thumb applies: cold stabilization is like tossing out the baby with the bathwater. Perhaps you are left with an aesthetically flawless wine, but you are also left with a lesser wine.

Turning Mr. Boyfriend Material Into The Boyfriend

Filed under: Living Self Improvement @ 9:41 am

It’s one of the most nerve-rattling-and necessary events in
every good relationship. Mr. Boyfriend Material eventually has
to become The Boyfriend. You’ve decided once and for all to take
it to the next level and send Mr. Boyfriend Material to
real-life coupledom.

You can charm the pants off anyone with your sugar lips and
defuse most potentially deadly showdowns with your razor-sharp
wit. Still, somehow, when it comes time to initiate the
relationship conversation (read: turning Mr. Boyfriend Material
into The One) none of that makes a damn difference.

You’re left tongue-tied and nerve-racked. That’s because that
couple-status report inevitably puts you in the clichéd
nagging-woman-pointing-at-her-stopwatch position — and him on
the utmost defensive. Someone is bound to get freaked out, hurt
or misled.

Because the check-in is a necessary milestone in any growing
relationship, you’ll have to face the music at some point. We’ve
come up with a plan for making the commitment conversation a lot
easier on both of you, and it’s actually effective.

When you kiss Mr. Boyfriend Material you get goosebumps. And at
the end of each date, you both agree to do it again…soon. But
since your status with Mr. Boyfriend Material is loose, “soon”
sometimes turns into days or even weeks.

Your goal is to establish some sort of romantic rhythm with Mr.
Boyfriend Material. Problem is you’re afraid that upping the
ante will cause him to fold his hand. Here’s the nudge. There’s
something he likes about this breezy setup or you’d be seeing
him more often than you do your manicurist.

Most likely, he fears sacrificing his time for steady dates with
you. So ease his anxiety by stressing how much is happening in
your life, the concert you saw last week or your friend’s
margarita party, and you’ll zap any jitters he has that dating
you will chip away at his independence. You’ll also become a
more valuable commodity.

Looking to be an exclusive couple? Dying to get engaged?

In a perfect world, all romantic relationships would sail
smoothly from sort-of-dating to madly-in-love. More often than
not, though, the road to Coupleville with Mr. Boyfriend Material
is dotted with commitment detours, ones that your man seems
unable to navigate.

Who doesn’t want to get closer to a man you’re crazy about? But
pushing for a tighter bond is a tricky task. After all, many men
are perfectly happy keeping things between the two of you the
same…indefinitely. So how do you give your love a nudge
without causing him to jump ship?

Things may feel serious with your man. After all, your
Friday-night dates often turn into 48-hour get-togethers, and
his rottweiler recognizes you when you walk in the door. But
since you haven’t had the official “talk” yet, you have
absolutely no clue if you’re his one and only…or if he even
wants you to be.

When the mood is relaxed, find out for sure whether Mr.
Boyfriend Material is seeing someone else by casually asking,
“Don’t the other women in your life get jealous that you spend
so much time with me?” If he just shrugs, follow up with a
playful “So, how many are there? I need to know what I’m up
against.” If he admits he’s dating around, don’t freak. You just
need to communicate calmly and clearly how long you’re willing
to be one of several.

Mr. Boyfriend Material will eventually be The Boyfriend if you
know how to work it. Either way, he’s yours for the taking.

Mexico: Drugs Galore!

Filed under: Internet Health @ 3:36 pm

You are going to find this incredible and I assure you I am not making any of this up: You can waltz into any pharmacy (Farmacia) in Mexico and buy almost anything without a prescription. Except for controlled substances, you can get most anything you want or need simply by asking.

This is astoundingly advantageous. Just think of it. You don’t necessarily have to pay a doctor’s office fee to get a prescription that you already know that you need. Let me qualify this statement.

When I have pain in my sinuses, my head feels like it is going to pop like a party balloon, and I cannot get any air up my nose, it doesn’t take a medical degree to figure out what is wrong nor what I need to take! You know what you need. Here is why I say this.

America is a drug-taking culture. We Americans take drugs at the drop of a hat, whenever we feel puny, and do so because we are attacked every time we turn on the TV or turn the page of a magazine with ads for prescription drugs. So when we start feeling a little “under the weather”, we run to the doctor for that little piece of paper. At the very least, we go to the pharmacist and ask for a recommendation of what to take.

However, what the pharmacist will show you is an array of weak sister, over-the-counter drugs that NEVER work.
The reason the over-the-counter stuff is so weak is that they are designed for someone who weighs less than 150 pounds. In other words, all drugs work effectively according to how heavy you are. That’s why the doctor is always weighing you when you go see him. One Actifed tablet won’t cut it for me because I weigh in at 265 pounds.

I think most Americans must have the equivalent of at least an undergraduate degree in Pharmaceutical science from all the drugs they’ve consumed. You KNOW what you need when you get sick! You have years of experience of doctors writing prescriptions for you and your various illnesses.

Let me be clearer. If you’ve been seeing an American doctor for some chronic illness, like arthritis, and he’s been prescribing such-and-such drug, chances are when you are in Mexico you can go into a pharmacy and simply ask for it. If you have a recurring illness for which you’ve been prescribed a certain drug, and the symptoms rear their ugly head when in Mexico, just pop on down to the local pharmacy and pick it upno prescription needed.

Having said all that, here’s the downside: You will be tempted to self-diagnose. I can just hear the sigh of relief from all the American doctors and pharmacists reading this column. I am not recommending self-diagnosisnot at all. If you listen well to your body, you will know when some symptom is new and unusual. When that happens, haul your little American nalgas (buttocks) down to the local doctor’s office. Don’t mess around with new symptoms. Listen to your body!

My point here is this: You come down with a cold. You have a nose of granite. Your sinuses are so clogged that you cannot get one breath in or out of them. Your head is killing you and you have muscle aches and pains. You don’t have to go to the doctor for a prescription when you already know what you need.

You know you need a decongestant, antihistamine, maybe something for a cough, and some pain relievers. In Mexico, you don’t have to mess around with weak over-the-counter, high-priced drugs (although they do have the popular brands here).

You can go to a pharmacy, talk with the pharmacist, and he will give you PRESCRIPTION-STRENGTH medications that will give you some relief.

Don’t mess around with those weak sisters.

How to Get a New Kitchen

Filed under: The Gardening Way @ 2:01 pm

Do you want to improve the look of your home? Have you thought of adding value to your home with a brand new kitchen?

The thought of home improvements, like a new kitchen, can be lingering thoughts. Projects like these can be expensive endeavors when most of us do not have the additional funds sitting in a bank account screaming for you to spend.

Maybe it’s time you consider a Home Improvement Loan. You may have heard different terms like Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) or Line of Credit. A HELOC could be the easiest and cheapest way to make improvements to your home and have your dreams become a reality.

A HELOC offers a low interest rate, usually tied to the prime rate and a low monthly payment, secured by your home. As the home owner, it frees you up to do whatever improvements you want on your home or property.

With a HELOC, you can have up to 100% of your home’s value available to you for improvements, rehabbing and life’s unplanned emergencies. You only pay for what you spend leaving funds available for other projects and/or emergencies. The loans are typically repaid over a 10 year amortization schedule.

A mortgage lender can better provide details and current rate information. Your available income, credit score and equity in your home will play a part in determining your rate and ability to qualify for different program options. Your lender will also be able to explain to you any tax savings and other advantages the loan may have for you.

A HELOC can help you with: getting that new kitchen, remodeling a bathroom, building a home addition, buying new furniture, landscaping in the Spring, and so on. What you spend your money on is entirely up to you.

Remember, financing shouldn’t be the most difficult part of getting that new kitchen you’re dreaming of! With a simple Home Improvement Loan, you’ll be on your way to harder decisions- like picking out the new cabinets and light fixtures!

Up The Sandbox!

Filed under: WWW @ 12:28 pm

Go to any internet marketing forum you want these days and
one of the topics is sure to be whether or not there is a
“sandbox” at Google where new sites are forced to come and
play for 3-6 months before joining the ranks of ranked and
searched results. On the surface it would appear that this
is so. New sites are typically taking a long time to get
indexed and even longer to show up in the search results.
So hence, the sandbox theory. Let’s examine some possible
reasons and more importantly, our reaction to it.

The most obvious possibility, (since no one outside of
Google really knows) is that because of the proliferation
of spam on the engines, Google is checking all the links to
these new sites. Sometimes a new site will appear sporting
thousands of backlinks, and this takes some time to check,
even given a rolling schedule of indexing by that pesky
spider! Google it seems is serious about link farms, and
anything that smacks of that may take some time to get
indexed. But then, so will most other sites. It is a very
large index, (some say nearing capacity, though I doubt
that will turn out to be true) and it is a gargantuan task
to keep it current and free of extraneous (read poor)
search results. There are other ideas out there, and
conspiracy theories abound, one being that it is an evil
plot to force newer sites in search of traffic to resort to
paying for Google Adwords. Uh-huh. A particularly amusing
thread is currently taking place at the High Rankings
forum, a must-read for all conspiracy theorists!

Since we don’t know, can’t know, will not know for sure
until the Google Gods unlock the keys to the kingdom and
enlighten us; it only makes sense to this webmaster to get
on with life. I’ve got new sites waiting, as do many. We
all languish at PR0 until (or if) there’s another update.
Some sites get picked up quicker than others, and to some
extent that is a measure of SEO. However just get over it!
Since there’s nothing concrete we can do except build great
content sites with lots of relevant links (legitimate) why
worry about any sandbox?!? Don’t get your knickers in a
knot! Write more content, articles, and get more sites to
link to you because of the worth of your site. There are
other sources of traffic, go get them! Do the right
thing for your business. Spend time on it, not worrying
about this.

Many of the leading voices in SEO agree that there may
indeed be a “sandbox”, and if there is, that may not
necessarily be a bad thing. You don’t want some farmer
(link) ranking ahead of your carefully crafted content
site, do you? Of course not! One thing is sure: if there is
a sandbox, it belongs to Google and if you want to play,
follow the rules and don’t cry! Pay or play!
