A Brief History

Here is the brief history of the varsity or award letter. In 1865, the Harvard baseball team added old English ‘H’embroidered on their gray flannel shirt. The football team followed using a ‘H’ These shirts were used as an award for certain players who played in the important games therefore this may have been the beginning of the varsity letter as an award. The letterman sweater was first used regularly in 1891. The date that letterman sweaters were used in high schools is unclear but they have been there for a long time too
