Big Pairs vs Suited Connectors
With a big poker pair, such as AA or KK, you are destined to either (a) win a small poker online pot by trying to proectet it, (b) win a big pot in the rare instance when another player has a big hand or flop a draw, or (c) lose a large pot when you’re up against something bigger, or you are outdrawn. Often, unless you are careful, there is no middle ground with these cards. Each is a bet you have to take.
Small pairs and suited cards, on the other hand, are attractive due to how easy it is to get away from the hand when you miss. You have no commitment to bet into scary boards, and you can often break a poker online player when the right flop comes, and they have no way to expect it. The risk/reward value here is actually higher, it seems, than with the big pairs, which is why you so often see well known pros that play these cards winning big pots against those committed pairs. To say, though, that these cards can be more valuable comes with an implied connotation: if they don’t pan out, they don’t pan out, and putting too much money in with them before they are ‘made’ is often incorrect. Many players exhibit an over-willingness to get involved in a pot with small cards when the price is bad, like they are trying to hard. So many players will come in with J 10 suited for instance in a raised pot. These cards are meant to see the flop cheaply for best equity. Sure, a gamble here and there is worthwhile, but there’s no use donking off money from one hand to the next. The beauty of poker is that there’s always another hand: another hand you can get into cheaply.
