HSE’s New Health and Safety Posters Go on Sale

Filed under: Business Opps, Lawyers' Net @ 8:46 am

The HSE has published new health and safety posters, which have been put up for sale with immediate effect. The attractive, modern and easily readable posters have been set up in simple terms and include the basic guidelines in a numbered list format, about what employers and workers should do and who to contact if there is a problem.

It is mandatory for employers, under the Health and Safety Information for Employees Regulations (HSIER), to display the posters in a place where it is possible for maximum number of people to read it. Instead of putting up the posters, employers also have the option of distributing leaflets containing similar information.

The older versions of the leaflets and posters (approved in 1999) have been criticized for being unattractive, because of which they are hardly read. In contrast, the new posters are appealing and are expected to provide a better understanding of the main health and safety laws, and will be beneficial to both employers and employees. In addition, the new leaflets and posters would also save the cost of updating the information on the older versions. The new leaflets are in the form of pocket cards and are better suited to the nature of most workplaces.

The older version of posters and leaflets can be used until 5 April 2014 provided they can be read easily, and other relevant information like the addresses of the Employment Medical Advisory Service and the enforcing authority are correct. The HSE has also announced that it will not be providing the older versions of the material anymore. HSE’s Infoline - 0845 345 0055 - can provide further information on the matter.

Wounded worker from Gateshead compensated by negligent employer

Filed under: Business Opps, Lawyers' Net @ 6:41 am

Yet another case has come to light, which stresses that employers need to pay more attention to the safety of their staff, as even basic safety precautions do not seem to be in place in many workplaces.

In a February 2007 incident, a 60-year-old man from Gateshead, while on duty, was climbing the ladder fixed to a van to reach the roof rack. The wet weather had made the steps of the ladder slippery causing the worker to fall and end up with a fractured heel. The worker’s leg had to be put in plaster for a period of four months and even after that, he has been unable to return to work for over two years.

The worker, who was a member of the union Unite, has finally settled the matter out of court with the company. He received a compensation of £120,000 after the company had accepted the charge that the accident was caused due to their inability to provide adequate safety to the employee.

A union official emphasise that it was clearly the fault of the company that one of their staff members had been injured, as they are legally responsible to make sure that all safety equipment is in place to ensure that such incidents do not occur.

Thompsons Solicitors representative Angela Collins added that her client has suffered immensely and has not been able to return to work, all due of the carelessness of the employer, who must have ensured that the employees are safe while they are on duty.

Companies need to be sure that they are giving the correct instructions to employees with regard to health and safety issues. Companies should make themselves fully aware of the most up-to-date requirements by visiting Workplace Law and looking at their highly regarded accredited nebosh course.
