Something Needs to Be Done about Algebra

Algebra is the most profound branch of maths. Although at beginning it may appear to just fly over your head, exercise helps in making understanding matters a lot better. One has to continue studying this field of study at higher educational stages like college, thus it is critical to create a strong base from the beginning.

The Troublesome Areas

Algebra handles a vast number of topics, graphing being one of them. This could include charting a circle, graphing systems of radical systems of equations, graphing inequalities or graphing quadratic equations . Some Other topic that is part of algebra has to do with exponents. This can range from subtracting exponents, dividing exponents or just employing the laws of exponents. Rationalizing, factorizing, matrices, hyperbolas and quadratics all have to do with algebra.

It is normally agreed that algebra is a tough subject. However, in today’s day and age that is not a problem as almost each student has access to a computer. A scholar can easily use online maths computer programs that instruct and test the user. For practicing and enhancing skills, there are worksheets available in these software program. Online tutors are also available and are easy to reach. The charges can be based on number of hours or per module and this works as if the student and the tutor were face to face.

Getting Aid with Algebra

There are a large number of packages that can help pupils. These computer programs provide bit-by-bit guides to help pupils over their troubles. These software packages can aid you with your homework, test readiness and even exam readiness! As algebra has a wide number of sub-sections you can select software programs that link to your specific difficulty or problem. This could be basic algebra, algebra 1, algebra 2 or just graphs. Some software programs also include games and videos that could further develop your algebraic skills.

Algebra calculators are also available over the Net. They can help solve many types of algebraic questions. Mostly these will include questions that have to do with quadratic equations or complex inequalities. Various types of calculators help pupils to concentrate on various areas of algebra.

Though these computer software packages and other aids can aid many individuals overcome a great number of problems, it is important that they are utilized for the correct function. Using these facilities for cheating would only be a loss to yourself. It is better to use them to check the answers of your homework assignments rather than using them to complete your homework.

Testing and Symptoms Offer Insight into Diagnosis of Mesothelioma

Filed under: Internet Health, Universe Of Science @ 12:30 am

Cancer of the mesothelium has a few primary symptoms. The main symptom of pleural mesothelioma is a lack of breath as a consequence of pleural effusion ” fluid being built up in the pleura, or membrane, encompassing the lung. The second most common symptomis chest pain because the tumor is attacking the chest wall. Symptoms may also include fatigue, loss of weight and night sweats

The primary symptomof patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, which is centralized in the abdomen, is abdominal swelling due to fluid buildup in the abdomen (a condition called ascites), pain in the abdomen, and blockage of the bowel.

It is key to understand that these symptoms could be caused by a myriad of diseases or conditions. Nevertheless, you should see a doctor if you have been exposed to asbestos and have experienced any of these symptoms.

Mesothelioma cancer is hard to identify, because less serious conditions also cause similar symptoms. Typical symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest or lower back pains due to accumulated fluid in the pleura
  • Burning up
  • Vomiting
  • Raspy voice
  • Having trouble swallowing
  • Coughing blood

One should not self-diagnose themselves. One suffering from any of the above symptoms should see a doctor and remain calm. A biopsy is the primary way the condition is confirmed. A pathologist removes a piece of tissue from the suspected region and performs an examination that will result in a very accurate diagnosis. Biopsies are generally not painful.

A CT scan (Computer Tomography is an option if you dont want a biopsy. This is an X-ray procedure where a scanner takes many cross-sectional images as it rotates around the body. Sometimes, the patient ingests a dye that helps define the picture. CT scans might be advantageous because of their simplistic and non-invasive nature, and they are known to be an effective diagnostic tool. Opinions vary whether a CT scan or biopsy is cheaper. If there are irregularities, a biopsy may also be needed to know if the abnormality is a tumor, and if so, whether it is malignant or benign. Pleural mesothelioma can also be diagnosed by taking a sample of fluid from the pleura and testing it for the presence of cancer cells.

Any of these methods may also be used to screen for mesothelioma. Patients are screened when they suspect they may be at risk but do not have typical symptoms, to ensure they are not at risk to get the cancer or to catch the cancer early. Patients should be screened for mesothelioma if they have a history of asbestos exposure.

Weather affects every aspect of the economy

Filed under: Universe Of Science @ 6:06 pm

c. 2004 Chris S. Orr CCM

Weather affects every aspect of our lives. It impacts our pocketbooks, our menus, our schedules and even our health.

We are aware of how cold weather drives up the price of natural gas and propane (just look at your heating bills from this year!) and how our insurance costs are adjusted for the amount of storm damage we sustain. Changes in the weather, either real or predicted, will affect the price of everything we buy, from peas to plywood. Sometimes the effect will be in our favor, sometimes it won’t. How much did you pay for vegetables last winter? Why are limes — small and hard as they are — so expensive right now? Is the quality of lettuce comparable to its price?

Contract prices on the Chicago Board of Trade are very weather sensitive. Weather has such a huge impact on the commodities market that traders and analysts pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars a month for commentaries on long-range weather forecasts. These commentaries make the rounds among traders and analysts two or three times a week. Based on these commentaries, the price of grain, cattle, beans, and all sorts of agriculture products is driven up or down.

Traders look for the elusive normal weather. If the summer rainfall forecast for the C Corn Belt of Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois is for above normal rainfall, futures may rise in anticipation of the crop getting too much moisture, stunting its growth. The same principle applies if the forecast is for too little rainfall. If the forecast calls for near normal rainfall, invariably the price of corn will fall in anticipation of a very good crop and too many bushels of corn on the market in the fall and winter. In other words, if the trading price is high, you’ll pay more at the grocery store; if it is low because of “normal” weather, you pay less.

Are you planning to do a little construction later this summer? Buy plywood before the first tropical storm forms over the Atlantic Ocean. The price of plywood soars as tropical storms and hurricanes approach the coast of the United States. People in the path of these storms buy up plywood to “batten down the hatches,” creating local shortages. Those shortages are filled by drawing on supplies from the rest of the country, limiting stocks and driving up prices.

Accurate weather forecasts help some businesses compete. The retailer Sears, Roebuck and Co. had its own meteorologists for many years so they could sell items based on the weather. Fans and air conditioners were in stock before a heat wave hit. Umbrellas went on sale when it rained. Subway’s corporate headquarters tracks individual store sales against the weather. It uses a history of weather and store sales along with the forecast to predict store volume. Their stores in southern California even give discounts on rainy days.

Let me pose a question to you…how much do you think the weather affects your daily schedule? Now, I don’t mean being a minute late to work because you had to run back in the house and grab an umbrella, but how does the weather seriously impact your plans?
Are you flying anywhere this summer? Fog, thunderstorms, freezing rain and heavy snow still halt flights and probably will for many years. It is just too dangerous to fly in any of those conditions. You’d think that with all of our technology we could fly aircraft into any sort of weather! You can avoid the inconvenience of flight delays by planning around the weather. Fog is most common in late fall and early spring, and usually lifts to a tolerable level by 10 a.m. Los Angeles, Denver, Salt Lake City and San Francisco get a lot of early morning fog during the winter. Plan to arrive at those destinations during the afternoon to avoid flight delays.

On the other hand, summer thunderstorms rattle the windows around Denver during the late afternoon and evening, while Phoenix sees windy evening thunderstorms. Arrive by mid afternoon to avoid these nuisance storms. If you are heading into the Midwest, thunderstorms tend to roll into Chicago and St. Louis after midnight, delaying red-eye flights. Just a little planning will save you the hassle of finding something to do at the airport while waiting for the next flight, or worse yet, missing a connecting flight and ruining your vacation.

Did you know that today’s weather will affect the aches and pains you will feel in two or three days? At least that is what some physicians believe. I always thought today’s weather brought me today’s aches and pains, but it appears the human body has a lag time of several days. It is possible to predict when you and I will feel these aches, pains and migraines a day or two in advance. Think of how wonderful it will be in the future when you can call the doctor and the appointment desk will have an opening available for you because your medical records matched the criteria for today’s aches-and-pains index!

The use of weather information goes far beyond, “partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of rain.” The price of food and the convenience of having items stocked at your store, the mini-golf place open when you’d like to go and the supply of electricity for your home are all governed by the weather. Your physical health is affected by the weather. Many of the things you will do this day will be based on the weather - past, present and future.

Environmentally-Friendly Earth Homes

Filed under: Universe Of Science @ 10:42 am

What are “Earth Homes?” Earth homes are houses that are basically constructed from the earth. Some earth homes are built from adobe, mud, straw or even underground as an earth-sheltered home. Environmentally friendly, earth homes are easy to warm and cool and extremely energy efficient.

Adobe Earth homes are houses constructed from bricks comprised of tightly compacted earth, clay and straw. Adobe earth homes can be naturally waterproofed by using fermented cactus juice!

Earth sheltered earth homes are houses the are constructed underground - or at least mostly beneath the ground surface. Surrounding soil is a superp and nautral insulation which makes these homes cheap to heat and cool. Usually installed in a well-drained hillside, earth sheltered homes have a skylight window that can fill the home with natural sunlight. Although costs may run a bit higher than conventional home construction, earth sheltered homes are a good, long-term investment as lowered maintenance and energy savings make up the difference.

Straw Bale earth homes are making a comeback as well. Straw bale earth homes are obviously constructed of straw and grass, are energy efficient, and can cut material building costs by as much as fifty percent.

Earth homes, such as Cob Houses are built from clay-type lumps of soil, sand and straw. Similar to the adobe homes, except cob earth homes do not use bricks or blocks. Cob homes have walls that are sculpted into smooth forms. Again, very energy efficient, cob homes are well-suited for the very cold climates and deserts.

Rammed earth homes may have over 18-inch, thick walls that are made from a comcination of dirt, sand, cement and water. Energy conservative, rammed earth homes have the appearance of bungalow-style charm and help keep the house warm in winter and cool in the summer. Additionally, rammed earth homes may last hundreds of years.

Why build an earth home? Earth homes conserve energy, and in most cases are easier to maintain and can endure for years to come. An excellent site to visit on earth homes: www.hobbithomes.ca This particular site even has a recipe for building your own “cob” earth home, as well as other projects.

As we embark on a strange, new age and global warming continuously on the rise, doesn’t it make sense to construct your new custom home as an earth home?

Sustainable Agriculture- A Case Study for Australia

Filed under: Universe Of Science @ 6:59 am

Introduction
Australia is oldest continent on earth and has one of the most fragile and least fertile soils. Other than Antarctica, Australia is the driest continent on this planet, with over 80% of our land arid and infertile. It has one of the least understood ecological systems in the developed world and there are new species of plants and animals discovered every year in Australia.
Yet for over 150 years we have been using “European Style” farming techniques with little regard to the fact that European soils are far more fertile and are often silt based, providing fertile soils every year.
Since the Second World War, the state of agricultural decay has increased dramatically with the “Great Agricultural Push in Australia”, in areas that were simply not suited for long-term agricultural use. Mechanisation, fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides as well as push to standardise products in order to increase yields (productivity) has led to extensive environmental catastrophes.
One example that clearly comes to mind is the vast lands in SW Australia (East of Perth), where people were fooled to believe that they could run agricultural operations over a long period of time.
Our land is still being deforested at a rapid rate leading to high levels of salinity, over-grazed leading to desertification and land degradation through bad soil management techniques.
Its water courses altered, dammed drained straightened etc. Whilst 95% of Victorian rivers lie in some state of decay, with fish breeding grounds lost, flows reduced, swamps drained etc. Our water management practices have in the past been inadequate. Just take a look at our open channel irrigation systems, which stretch across a vast reach of Australia. It loses a third of its volume through evaporation.
In 1983 during our last water restrictions the government promised that once the Thompson and Dartmouth Dams were finished that we would never have water restrictions again. Twenty years later it’s happening again. What has happened to our vision?
These are just simple examples of where our ignorance and lack of foresight has let us astray. There has been and still is an irresponsible approach to water, soil and forestry management.
Today Australia faces many environmental issues of which the most important are:
1.Water management
2.Land Degradation and poor soil management
3.Deforestation
4.Overgrazing
Yet very little has been addressed. For over 100 years we couldn’t even get Victoria South Australia and NSW to sign an agreement for a management plan for the Murray River.
These mistakes have led us to a more contemporary approach to agriculture. No longer are farmers just simply doing what “their fathers did”. It simply doesn’t work and is a time bomb ready to explode. The explosion being total desertification and degradation of our land within our lifetime! This has pushed us to a “big picture” approach to Agriculture, which has made us stop for a moment and think about what we are doing. Over the last 30 years there has been a push into sustainable agricultural practices leading us to better resource management with a long-term view.
Sustainable Agriculture can be described as resource management based agricultural system that minimises the impact of agriculture produce and practices whilst providing a profitable output or produce at minimal impact to the surrounding environment, both short and long-term, whilst maximising biodiversity.

Biodiversity
So what is so important about biodiversity? Biodiversity gives us the “quality of life” that enables us to survive and enjoy life. Life’s wonderful choices! Many choices provide many solutions especially in the random changing realm of Darwin’s Natural Selection. We must maintain biodiversity if the human species is to survive.

Farm Management Plan
An integral part of any Sustainable Agricultural venture is to have a Farm Management Plan.
This analyses all the resource to minimise inputs, and provides a suitable output with view to long-term sustainability.
Inputs
These inputs could be but are not limited to the following:
•Water
•Soil
•Fertilisers
•Seeds
•Chemicals including pesticides, herbicides, fungicides
•Labour
•Machinery including fuel

The Farm Management Plan should also incorporate a vision for what you want to achieve, assess the inherent risks and provide contingency plans to minimise all the exposure to risks as part of the plan. It also provide solutions through an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan
A Farm Management Plan should look at all aspects of the current state of the venture and provide any solutions, generally organic based, to rectify any inherent problems occurring or to provide practices that will not lead to long-term problems.
Many of the problems in intensive (monoculture) agriculture can be reversed if all the parameters are understood. The problem in the past has been we have not taken the time to analyse and understand our soils and ecological systems that support us until it is too late. In the past, (and still happening today) there has been a push by big corporations, such as Monsanto, DuPont etc. to buy…buy….buy their agricultural products, whilst their consultants, provided us with the wrong, often biased information leading us to make bad choices over time.
Whilst Sustainable Agriculture is the right step in our approach to resource management we still have a long way to go to change people’s habits and provide them with a greater understanding of our ecological systems which is blocked by our ignorance and apathy from distractions such as terrorism, boat people and war on Iraq. The real issue is resource management, which we alone must take control of and not rely on external states or systems to determine our destiny or freedom of choice.
